Training Placements

Placement Opportunities for APAC Students

Clinical placements are an essential part of training in therapeutic play skills and play therapy. They provide an excellent opportunity for organisations working with children to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in a safe way and at little or no cost. They are not intended as a low cost way of funding services over a longer period.

It is vital that organisations providing placements observe the APAC standards and that there is a contract that clearly defines the responsibilities of the trainee and the placement organisation that satisfies the trainee’s clinical supervisor and the training provider.

Please Note: For PG Cert & PG Dip placements a DLP (Safe guarding lead) is required on site at all times. Students may not be paid directly by clients/parents for any Therapeutic Play or Play Therapy clinical placement sessions or supervision. The organisation may contribute towards supervision.

Bredon Hancock's Endowed C of E First School - Tewkesbury

Description

We are a happy, family school with a Christian ethos where staff, children and families enjoy working together to continuously seek improvement and promote high standards of achievement and success. We are a small village school with approximately 160 pupils, aged 4-10 years, arranged currently in six classrooms, each accommodating a single year group. We are extremely proud of our school and invite you to come and see it for yourself. At Bredon Hancock’s, we value each and every one of our children; they are all unique and shine in many different ways. If a child is identified by the class teacher as needing a little additional support in a specific area, then they will be placed in an intervention. Some interventions are implemented to support a child’s academic knowledge whilst others are used to aid their social skills or mental health.

We believe that by offering Play Therapy, it would benefit these children so they have a safe space to disclose their feelings and this could benefit the children who have suffered with trauma and some of our children with SEND.

St Theresa’s Primary School - Chester

Description

Platform For Life is a Chester-based charity. Founded in 2017, we developed from a small volunteer counselling service, helping young families experiencing multiple challenges, such as homelessness, debt and parenting difficulties. We could see that poor mental health was preventing families from overcoming their challenges, so we set out to develop an exemplary and inclusive range of accessible support services to help families achieve positive changes in their lives. All too often, the cycle of mental ill health is passed down from one generation to the next, and that has been one of our key drivers: to break that cycle and improve individuals’ life chances.

Rape and Sexual Violence Project (RSVP) - Birmingham

Description

RSVP is a specialist service supporting children and young people (CYP) across Birmingham and Solihull who have experienced child sexual abuse (CSA) and child sexual exploitation (CSE). Our office is based in Birmingham city centre.

RSVP provides advocacy for CYP navigating the criminal justice process, alongside trauma-informed counselling.

As a service, we would greatly benefit from having a play therapist. Play is the natural language children and young people (CYP) use to communicate, and many of the children we support are very young and would respond well to this specialist intervention.

Family Change Service – Perth

Description:

Family Change’s is a social work funded therapeutic trauma recovery service with the aim of providing appropriate, effective and timely reparative therapeutic services for children, young people and families.

We are primarily a play therapy organisation so know the effectiveness of this for children and young people. We always enjoy having students join our team as we learn from them as they build skills and develop their practice. We believe that early and focussed intervention will help children and young people and their families to make sense of their experiences, enabling them to cope effectively, so that the likelihood of lasting harm is reduced.

Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni – Abergavenny

Description

We are a Welsh medium Primary school in the heart of Abergavenny.  All our pupils are important as individuals and it is this principle of respecting the individual and placing the needs of the individual at the centre of everyday that is at the heart of the ethos, values and success of our school. As a school with rising needs, we are always looking for ways to support our children. Accessing play therapy is difficult, so we would welcome giving trainees opportunities to provide this type of intervention in our school following the completion of their studies.

Scoil Bhríde Midleton - Co. Cork

Name of Provider:

Scoil Bhríde Midleton

Description:

We are a large primary school in East Cork with six Autism classes. We are a diverse setting with over 30 nationalities present in our school. We would be considered a DEIS school in all but name.  Since the Covid pandemic we have seen an increase in school refusal and anxiety.  With the lack of therapeutic interventions within our education system, children are struggling with these challenges.  We want our children to be happy coming and going from school and for school to be a place of nurture, safety and growth for them. We have a lovely room already allocated and this could be a shared resource between Trainees.

Scoil Bhríde Midleton, Ashlin Road, Castleredmond, Midleton, Co. Cork, P25 R248
